The San Francisco Rent Board Commission is the Board which administers the city's rent control law.
Currently, that Board is appointed solely by the Mayor and the Commissioners serve at his will. The
Commission currently has 2 tenants, 2 landlords and 1 homeowner. The SF Tenants Union and Board of
Supervisors are looking at placing a measure on the November ballot to change how this Board is appointed.
The proposal make the Commission 3 tenants, 2 landlords and 2 homeowners. It would give the Board of
Supervisors three appointments, give the Mayor three appointments, and have one member selected jointly.
Landlords will spend tens of thousands of dollars fighting this measure in November. Before we move
forward on this measure, we would like to assess the interest of tenants in reforming the Rent Board and
willingness to participate in a grass roots campaign.
