Sunday, May 3, 2009 is the 85th birthday observance of Mr. Robert Pender, of one of PRO’s
founders.  This unique event is being made possible by the
generous support of Mr. Rob
Rosania, the owner of Parkmerced, and the efforts of the Parkmerced management
team lead by Mr. Bert Polacci and Ms. Julia Felts.
The 10 AM event will be in the
Parkmerced Commons, at the intersection of Font Boulevard, San Juan Bautista Circle, and
Josepha Avenue, just a stone’s throw from Mr. Pender’s home.

Mr. Pender, “an old Brooklyn boy,” first saw San Francisco while recovering at the old military
hospital in The Presidio.  He was recovering from injuries sustained fighting in World War II.
This began a life-long respect and love for San Francisco.

Mr. Pender has decades of service to the San Francisco community, before and during his 44
years at Parkmerced.  He helped to form PRO to fight the condominium conversion of
Parkmerced.  He was also one of the pioneers of integration of Parkmerced.  Over the years,
along with other volunteers, he has saved residents of Parkmerced hundreds of thousands of
dollars, and helped shape changes in San Francisco civic codes.

Mr. Pender was born a fighter, and he continues today with an iron will and a heart as big as
Parkmerced.  But, the May observance is not about fighting.  It is an acknowledgement of Mr.
Pender’s birthday and his continuing service to the communities of Parkmerced and San
Francisco.  An informal open house is being held afterward at Mr. Pender’s home 5 Josepha
Avenue, San Francisco, CA.
