NERT information

30 people had signed up last summer to take classes from the SFFD on neighborhood emergency response training.
Sadly, only four of us showed up at the newly cleaned up space at 345 Vidal Drive. for the first class. Eleven others from
other areas attended. Lt. Erica Arteseros, NERT coordinator, cancelled further classes in Parkmerced, because at least 30
should be in attendance.

Five Parkmerced neighbors decided to take classes at a nearby facility, Ward Rec. Ctr. In Ingleside.  Capitol Avenue and
Montana Street. We continued, with about 30 others from Ingleside and other areas for six weeks. Two of the sessions
were hands-on sessions, one where we got a VICTIM out from under debris and learned to use a fire extinguisher the
correct way. Everyone should have an extinguisher that’s at least this size: 3-A:40-B:C, with a metal (not plastic) handle on
top. If you have to put out a small fire yourself, a plastic top will burn easily. We should keep on hand a 3-days supply of
water, because in a large quake or fire it would take 3 days for help to get to most people. Also items like computer monitor
bases, heavy pictures or mirrors hanging on walls and easily moved objects on shelves should be secured with museum
putty, sold at the hardware store.

We received our Ids and helmets and vests on April 20th, except for a couple who had to miss a class or two (classes were
6:30-9:15). They can sit in on future sessions at other sites and then get their IDs and equipment.  Beatrice Powell and I
and Sara Dibene have our equipment. We go occasionally to the one-year-old Ingleside library to meet with the other
NERTs to refresh our skills. Anyone who has had NERT training is welcome to meet at the Ingleside library on the
Wednesday that we meet there. Call Edie Schaffer at 337-9735 or write her at
edie_schaffer@yahoo.com Classes are still
in session; for times, call SFFD at 970-2022 or mail
sffdnert@sfgov.org.

SAFE information

At 50 Chumasero Drive our small but effective neighborhood watch committee had a meeting in our lobby with resident
services manager Bryce Boddie, who went over the workings of the new fob system, especially as it applies to the 10th
through the 12th floors of the towers. There were 17 of us who had questions plus a few neighbors who were coming in the
building or leaving, who we persuaded to stop and listen and also ask questions. Meeting time was arranged the day
before with Bryce who was very accommodating and helpful, since we had received the new fob notice just a few days
before time to turn them in, When someone became angry about life in the PENTHOUSE, she calmed down when she
realized Bryce would take her application for the special code to his office and she would not have to walk over to Varela
Avenue. A young man whose girlfriend visits him often was glad to find he could get an extra fob for her to use for just $20.
Love was saved once again.
