The Pender Family Memorial Service
was held Friday July 15 , 2011 at 2:00
PM at the Broadmoor Presbyterian
Church Daly City, CA
An additional Memorial Service will be
held at a later date in Robert Pender
Park in Juan Bautista Circle.
Robert Pender, April 30, 1922 to June
26, 2011, was one of the founding
members of The PRO on March 4,
1974. He was also a founding
member of The San Francisco
Tenants Union.
He worked tirelessly for decades in
the labor movement and as a tenants'
rights activist. Mr. Pender was
respected throughout San Francisco
and was on a first name basis with
most of the political movers and
shakers.
Despite this Mr. Pender remained a
humble person, caring for fellow
tenants and remaining involved until
his death. He shared his cumulative
experience with fellow board
members and fellow residents.
Any visit with Mr. Pender was
highlighted by spirited conversation
during which Robert would get you to
join The PRO and during which he
would make sure you were a
registered and active voter.
He was also fond of saying, “ I'm a
stubborn old Brooklyn boy. I was
born a fighter, and I’ll go out a fighter.”
For his 85th birthday he was honored
by Parkmerced with the renaming of
Parkmerced Commons to The Robert
Pender Park in Juan Batista Circle. A
commemorative bench and plaque
were placed in the park by
Parkmerced Investors, LLC.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on April 30, 1924
to Margaret O'Connor and Stanley
Pender. Mr. Pender was the beloved
husband of Barbara Pender who
predeceased him after 34 years of
marriage.
He is survived by his daughter,
Maureen Clement and her husband,
Alan and by his grandchildren,
Brandon and Alana Clement. Also by
his stepchildren, Bonnie Hamling,
Becky Dotson and Bobby Bell. Plus
many extended family.
In April 2009 The San Francisco
Board of Supervisors voted
unanimously to declare May 3, 2009
"Robert Pender Day in San
Francisco."
He served his country in the U.S.
Army from December 1942 to
December 1944. It was during
recovery from wartime injuries at
Letterman Army Hospital that he fell in
love with San Francisco. Following
the war he returned briefly to
Brooklyn, NY before settling in Los
Angeles, and later moving to San
Francisco.
Mr. Pender was an active member of
Broadmoor Presbyterian Church for
44 years and served as an Elder.
Mr. Pender died at home, as was his
wish, Sunday, June 26, 2011.
